The Southwood Volunteer Fire Dept.

Have you ever wanted to be a part of a volunteer organization but feel that you don’t have the necessary time to devote to it?   Or maybe you see the Fire Trucks go by, and while you respect what they do, you just can’t picture yourself running into a burning building, or extricating someone from a vehicle.  There are many other ways that you can be a part of our team and be a real help to our Department, and to this Community.  Here are a few:

Like Playing with Computers?  We have a three-computer network set up that needs updates and attention that we could always use help with.  We also have a website that could use updates and a fresh perspective.  Plus, we have the data entry of calls, records, and inventory that needs to be kept up to date.

Southwood Support Team:  Our Support Team, which currently consists of seven individuals, helps us out anyway that they can; from cooking at important meetings, to helping us plan and work at special events.  I cannot say enough about this group, and the

importance of their job.

Of course, if you are interested in the traditional roles…

Fire Police:  This is another very important job.  They help direct traffic on both Fire and Rescue scenes to keep everyone at the scene safe and to bring order to chaotic situations.

EMT:  If you have ever thought about becoming an Emergency Medical Technician, this is a great chance for you to do it.  Like all of our training, it is free to the Volunteer- and the rewards are great.  The majority of our calls here in Southwood are medical calls so we can never have too many EMTs on board.

Firefighters:  The job of Firefighter entails many things.  There are Interior Firefighters, who are the ones who go into the building to fight the fire, or to investigate an alarm activation until it is deemed safe for others to come inside.  You can also be an Exterior Firefighter, which means that you can still fight a fire, but only from the outside.  Still others are drivers / pump operators, some get to use our Hurst tools to open up an automobile and help with the extrication of a patient, some help in changing out air tanks when the bottles are empty, some help out with getting tarps, tools, water, etc.  No job is any less important than another.

If you have any questions about any of these jobs, or about anything else, please do not hesitate to call us at 315-469-5171 or stop by on a Tuesday night. We are located at 4581 Grace Place, Jamesville. You can also print out a membership application.

We are very family oriented here and we plan to have a lot of fun this summer together, hopefully you can join us.
